Northern Ireland is set to be one of the most plugged-in and eco-friendly areas in the British Isles, with charging points for electric cars to be installed in the next few weeks. There will be more than 40 charge points placed in car parks in participating areas and rapid charge points will be installed on busy roads.
Roads Minister Mr Kennedy said: “We are now at a stage where we can begin to install the infrastructure and over the next few weeks more than 40 public charge points will be installed in Belfast City Council, Newry and Mourne District Council, Armagh City Council, Derry-Londonderry Council, Larne District Council and Fermanagh District Council, with four rapid charge points to be installed at key locations on our strategic road network.”
Homeowners and businesses will be given grants for installing charge points in their own properties, and if anyone wants to buy an electric car there are government subsidies available.
The minister acknowledged the slow uptake of electric cars in Northern Ireland, but hopes that this new scheme coupled with exceptionally cheap running costs of electric vehicles will mean they will soon become a popular choice.
